Five new songs from Backstreet Boys' upcoming album

Category: , , By Manu

Was a big fan of Backstreet Boys back when they were famous. And I kinda like the direction they are trying to go with their last album and with this one they have successfully transitioned to the new age of boy band music. Apparently they have recorded over 18 songs for their new album and five of them are up for grabs here.

X Men Origins: Wolverine Workprint Leaked: Pirates Gone "Overboard"??

Category: , By Manu
Just the other day I was browsing and something startling came across my eyes. X Men Origins: Wolverine, which is supposed to release on May 1st, was available for download(of course an incomplete workprint with green screens and ropes still visible). This got my eyes popping out of its sockets, and at the same time my skin crawling at the sheer extent to which pirates are willing to go.

I am a guy who doesn't hate or write off piracy as a completely evil thing. If I really want to see a movie, I will see it in the theaters and won't succumb to piracy. And moreover If you want to have the feel of the movie you should watch it in the theaters. But pirates releasing prints of the movie before the movie has even released is one of then despicable acts-an act devoid of ethics.

This has gone to a new level with Wolverine releasing 2 months before its actual release. Even though all pirates doesn't deserve to be punished, the ones who released(and re-released) are very much deserving of the axe of the law. They should be punished rather hardly for committing such an act of "media terrorism".

And according to sources there was over 100,000 downloads for the movie baffled me. Who would want to see an incomplete version of the movie with strings and green screens and destroy the feel of the movie. And before posting something like this one should think about the amount of work put in to the movie by the actors, director and the whole crew, and how they are destroying it single handedly. You should at least give the movie a couple of weeks in the theater before you do something like this.

You can get the work print of the movie even now on p2p networks, but I strongly recommend against it. Not because of the legal implications but because of our moral obligations. The FBI is on the case and 20th Century Fox looks pretty confident that they will find and prosecute the person/persons behind the leak(and I hope so too). Apparently there is some kind of advanced watermarking employed by Fox(USVO watermarking) which will lead to the culprit.

iTunes goes Bollywood

Category: , , By Manu
An awesome Bollywood version of Apple's iconic iTunes ads! Dancers are silhouetted against a vibrant green background in classic iTunes ad style, performing Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Indian Folk, Hip-Hop, and modern Bollywood dance. The song used is "Bachna Ae Haseeno" from the movie Bachna Ae Haseeno, which is actually a remix of an older song by the same name.

Sure we have known this for long how the iPod has changed the way the world listens to music, revolutionizing the way things are. The new deal between Steven Job’s Apple and Hungama.com means that Indipop music and Bollywood soundtracks can be downloaded from iTunes across America, Europe and Asia with effortless ease and reasonable rates. This will be a big help for the Music Industry in India as its struggling from piracy by opening up a whole new market.

Anyways the ad is catchy, I just wish they didnt use the word Bollywood, which in my opinion is so degrading to Indian Film Industry.

P.S. Thanks to Kiran who send me this video and brought this into my notice.

Trailer Time: X-Men Origins:Wolverine, Star Trek, Public Enemies and 17 again

Category: , , , By Manu
Its time for the round up of new trailers..once again.

X-Men Origins:Wolverine
To start off the brand new trailer of X-Men Origins has hit the internet. I get the feeling that this one is going to be epic. There is also a flash of young Cyclops in there. Wonder how thats gonna turn out.

Plot: Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program.

Star Trek
A new trailer of Star Trek has been released. I've never been a Star Trek fan and as a matter opf fact I positively hated the only movie I've seen(Star Trek: Nemesis). But from the looks of this trailer I may like this one.

Plot: A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

Public Enemies
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale- Do I need to say more? May be the director Michael Mann(The Heat, The Insider, The Last oh the Mohicans) ring a bell.

Plot: The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.

17 again
A new trailer of 17 again is up at YouTube. This sounds pretty similar to "13 going on 30" but just the reverse. But from the trailer this can be entertaining. A good family entertainer I guess.

Plot: About a guy whose life didn't quite turn out how he wanted it to and wishes he could go back to high school and change it. He wakes up one day and is seventeen again and gets the chance to rewrite his life.

Trailer Time: Funny People, Chocolate and 12 Rounds

Category: , , , By Manu
Judd Apatow's Funny People
I think nobody needs an introduction to Judd Apatow. The guy who brought us Knocked Up, Pineapple Express and The 40 year old virgin comes a new movie with Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler as the lead actors.

Plot:George is a very successful stand up comedian who learns that he has an untreatable blood disorder and is given less than a year to live. Ira is a struggling up-and-coming stand up comedian who works at a deli and has yet to figure out his onstage persona. One night, these two perform at the same club and George takes notice of Ira. George hires Ira to be his semi-personal assistant as well as his friend.

Chocolate HD Trailer
I don't know if any of you have heard about Tony Jaa. I'm not really a martial arts kind of guy but this guy made me watch all his films even though they had like zero plot. The action of this guy is something else. No strings, no stunt doubles and 100 % real action. Chocolate is along the similar thread and by the same guy who made Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong, but with a female lead. From the trailer this one also promises a load of action- Muay Thai style.

Plot: An autistic woman with powerful martial art skills looks to settle her ailing mother's debts by seeking out the ruthless gangs that owe her family money

12 Rounds HD Trailer
Have any of you seen "The Marine", the action film by John Cena. I laughed so much that I was on the floor watching that. Well, after that disaster John Cena is starring in another "action" movie 12 rounds. The only consolation is that the director of this movie is a pretty decent one who gave us Die Hard 2, and an array of mediocre films. Atleast this won't be as bad as The Marine. From the trailer the movie sounds like a mix of Die Hard action and Die Hard 3 style "chasing after the clues".

Plot: Detective Danny Baxter (Cena) discovers his girlfriend (Scott) has been kidnapped by a ex-con tied to Baxter's past, and he'll have to successfully complete 12 challenges in order to secure her safe release.

Oscar 2009 Winners : Slumdog Millionaire does it again

Category: , By Manu
The 2009 Academy Award function just ended and Slumdog Millionaire sweeps 8 out of 10 categories it was nominated. I am really happy now and that is cause of many reasons. Firstly this Oscar awards saw an Indian get three Oscars- Best Original Score and Best Original Song for A.R Rahman and Best Sound Mixing for Resul Pookutty. Secondly I am happy that all my predictions for the movie Slumdog Millionaire and its music is coming true.

The rags to riches story Slumdog Millionaire fulfills its Oscar destiny by bagging the Best Picture and seven other awards, including the directorial honours for Danny Boyle. A story of hope amid squalor in Mumbai, India, “Slumdog Millionaire” also had wins that include adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and both music Oscars, score and song. Danny expresses his gratitude to everyone and especially to the people of Mumbai saying they “dwarf even this guy” as he held up his Oscar statue.

With two of the three song nominations, “Slumdog” won for “Jai Ho,” the rousing Bollywood number that closes the film. “Slumdog” composer A.R. Rahman, a dual Oscar winner for the score and song, said the movie was about “optimism and the power of hope.” “All my life, I’ve had a choice of hate and love. I chose love, and I’m here,” Rahman said.

The other top winners were Kate Winslet who got Best Actress for the Holocaust themed "The Reader", Sean Penn who got the Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in "Milk", Heath Ledger who got Best Supporting Actor for his unforgettable rendition of The Joker in the movie "The Dark Knight", and Penelope Cruz who got Best Supporting Actress for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona".

Ledger's Oscar for the Warner Bros. blockbuster was accepted by Ledger’s parents and sister on behalf of the actor’s 3-year-old daughter, Matilda.

“I have to say this is ever so humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry,” said his father, Kim Ledger. “We’d like to thank the academy for recognizing our son’s amazing work, Warner Bros., and Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.”

The epic love story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which led with 13 nominations, had three wins, for visual effects, art direction and makeup. “The Dark Knight” had a second win, for sound editing. The ever adorable Wall-E got the Best Animation Feature Film Award.

Hugh Jackman who hosted this year's Oscars was not the usual comedian host, but a song and dance man. He asked an interesting question in his song- why don't comic book movies get nominated?- a definite dig at the omission of The Dark Knight from most of the important categories. I definitely felt it at least deserved a nomination for Best Picture.

Courtesy: MSNBC for all the quotes which I was not alert enough to remember :D.

For a Full list of Oscar Nominees and Winners go here.

Edit- I made a blunder of mislabelling the 2009 awards as 2008 awards. Corrected. Sorry for that :)

Trailer Time : Inglourious Basterds, Transformers 2, Crank 2, Planet 51

Category: , By Manu
Its time to take a look at the new trailers and feel the excitement.

Inglourious Basterds(aka Inglorious Bastards)
Quentin Tarantino is back. Now he tries his hands at WWII and make some Nazis go through violent death. This is going to be awesome.

Plot: In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.
Release:21 August 2009

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Finally after the Super Bowl teaser a full length Trailer of Transformers 2 released and I should say it looks awesome. This is an epic movie with building smashing, robots fighting, and Megan Fox (gasp!!!). I'm sure to catch this in the theaters.

Plot: Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle

Crank2: High Voltage
Exactly like I thought, Chev Chelios is indeed scraped off the road with a shovel and put into a car!!. This is going to be one crazy and wild movie-even crazier than Crank.

Plot:Chelios faces a Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working.
Release: 17 April 2009

Planet 51
Another interesting animation movie came across my eyes- Planet 51. I havent heard anything about this movie, but liked it from the trailer. The animations is pretty decent, and its funny. The cast is also impressive with Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott and Jessica Biel.

Plot:The inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when an astronaut arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home.

Superbowl Trailer Round up: Transformers 2, Pixar's UP, GI Joe,Race to the Witch Mountain, Star Trek, Monsters vs Aliens

Category: , , , , By Manu
Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen
A new very short teaser trailer aired yesterday and from the looks of it Transformers 2 will be one hell of an action packed movie with things getting blown up and destroyed right and left. Oh man!!!

Plot:Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.

Up
From the makers of Incredibles, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Monsters.Inc and many more thoroughly enjoyable animation movies comes a new movie "Up" made exclusively by Pixar and distributed by Disney.

Plot:By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Just saw the sneak peek of G.I Joe:Rise of the Cobra and I'm stumped. I thought G.I Joe was gonna be one of those "shoot all you want with your guns" movies but I wasn't prepared for this. This looks awesome and I'm sure to catch this movie in the theater. I live in India and G.I Joe is not that popular here; may be that's why I'm unfamiliar with it.

Plot:An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

Angels and Demons
I have posted a trailer of this movie earler, but this one has something more I guess. Anyways check it out.

Race to Witch Mountain
I've always been amazed at how well Dwayne Johnson or "Rock" as we all know him do comedy. Looks like Disney has adopted him for its "tough guy part" in their Family movies. This one looks interesting and funny and coming from Disney I'll probably love it.

Plot: A UFO expert enlists the help of a cabbie to protect two siblings with paranormal powers from the clutches of an organization that wants to use the kids for their nefarious plans.

Land of the Lost
The name Will Ferrel definitely scares me and approach this movie with caution. But from the trailer it looks pretty decent. But you know what they say-"Never judge a movie by the trailer".

Plot: Three adults inadvertently stumble into a mysterious land populated by dinosaurs and other creatures, including the mysterious and dangerous race of Sleestak.

Monsters vs Aliens
I have posted another trailer for this movie too over here. But this is a new one and I'm sure you all will enjoy.

Star Trek
Looks like a Star Trek movie I will finally love. The new trailer gives us much more of the much awaited Star Trek and teases us with incredible visual effects and action.

Plot:A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

Rock'n'Rolla - Movie Review- Guy Ritchie back at what he does best

Category: , , , By Manu
If you know Guy Ritchie only as Madonna's husband, then you probably won't have seen Lock,Stock and Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. Guy Ritchie is known for his quirky lines, convoluted plot lines and stylish cinematography. But he went wrong somewhere down the line and ended up with Swept Away which is as low as one could go. But with the new movie Rock'n'Rolla Guy Ritchie is on a comeback. This movie is a definite step in the right direction.

Plot: In London, a real-estate scam puts millions of pounds up for grabs, naturally attraction the attention of some of the city's scrappiest tough guys (Butler, Elba) its more established underworld players (Wilkinson), and others -- all of whom are looking to get rich quick.

Review: You have to be in a certain kind of mood to view a Guy Ritchie movie. I was in that mood the other day and couldn't resist Rock'n'Rolla. This movie is the same kind of frenzied whacked out hyper-plotted adventure through the darker side of London. As usual, the cast of characters is huge. And everyone is screwing everyone else. I won't even try to synopsize the plot. Just know you can expect a lot of twists and shady characters. This was a bit tamer than the previous two movies mentioned above. It was a little more cerebral.

Rock'n'Rolla is pretty much Guy Ritchie showing us all that he hasn't lost it. One thing that's instantly improved to his Swept Away piece is the fact that he's got a flawless casting this time, a plot that is untouchable as is the script and a killer Soundtrack that had me bobbing my head in rhythm to it. His stylish direction (using freeze-frames, voice-over, captions and snappy editing) expertly juggles the different characters and story lines until everything begins to fall into place for the final act. That is exactly what Guy Ritchie is good at and he is at his best in this movie. There's a dance scene between Thandie & Gerard that's one of the coolest segments within the film, using Graphic Novel-esque subtitles as they talk and dance, pure genius.

Rock'n'Rolla is not a film for everyone and forget understanding the movie if you don't have subtitles or you understand the very British accent well. But no harm in trying, you may as well fall in love with Guy Ritchie's movies- I know I did. There may be many instances that you won't get the British argot(some of them are hilarious) but unless you are a really passive viewer you can figure out what they mean in a minute.

The performances are excellent but the ones that standout is Toby Kebbell, who steals the entire film with a terrific turn as Johnny, the Rock'n'Rolla of the title and Mark Strong as Archie. I mean this actor(Archie)seems to have something cheeky about him that always produces a wry smile with me. And he carries himself in that dignified manner but yet radiate an amount of cockiness. The performances are also a testament to Ritchie's direction that he manages to get decent performances out of three of cinema's most irritating actors(Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy and Thandie Newton).

My Verdict: Rock'n'Rolla is a nonstop parade of improbable dastardly characters, assorted incompetent criminals, burned-out rockers, wigged-out junkies, criminal masterminds and dimwitted hoods—and that’s not even taking into account "unkillable" Russians, an ice queen of a duplicitous accountant, gay gangsters and the gangsters they make nervous. Its a joy to find Guy Ritchie at the top of his game and this makes me look forward to "The Real Rock'n'Rolla" the sequel to this movie. It's class, it's violent, it's funny and more importantly it's dark, rich and satisfying.

The Sequel:
The Real Rock'n'Rolla is the sequel to "Rock'n'Rolla", Ritchie has implied it has already been written and it's ready to go as soon as his next project is over with. Also depending on the box office of the first movie it could have many more installments. Without giving too much away from the first film part two will include Johnny Quid, Archie and the Wild Bunch. This may not be as funny as Snatch and Lock Stock but these characters are just as lovable.

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes may not be quite the Sherlock Holmes you've known

Category: , , , By Manu
Guy Richie who is best known for his fast paced, slightly comical and wildly stylish, brain twisting British crime thrillers, Lock Stock and Smoking Barrel and Snatch being his best. I've been a fan of his works and loved his style of film making( I'm conveniently forgetting Swept Away)and been looking forward to a good movie from him. I saw Rock'n'Rolla couple of days back and I think Guy Ritchie is in the right direction for a comeback after the disastrous Swept Away. This made me take a more detailed look at his new adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. I've heard about the project and it struck me as odd that Guy Ritchie will choose such a topic for a movie and was apprehensive about it. What I didn't think of was the possibility that instead of Guy Ritchie conforming to Sherlock Holmes, he might just modify Sherlock Holmes to his style.

I saw an article and a still from the movie in NewYork Times that completely put things in perspective.
I think the picture speaks for itself. Thats Sherlock Holmes we see in the movie with blood on his bare chest and Robert Downey Jr showing off his well chiseled abs. Well for all those who pictured Sherlock Holmes as a quite, passive, think tank Guy Ritchie's version of Sherlock Holmes is gonna give a rude shock. I for one think it is absolute genius using Sherlock Holmes' boxing and sword fencing background to good use. Here is a little excerpt from the article:

IN a filthy, dank labyrinth of rooms below the streets of the East End, Sherlock Holmes was solving a case. That is, Robert Downey Jr., playing Holmes in the forthcoming film “Sherlock Holmes,” was engaged in hand-to-hand, foot-to-stomach combat with a very big and very bad villain (Robert Maillet). Bam! Pow! Ouch! Both characters would end up knocked out on the floor, along with Holmes’s trusty sidekick, Dr. John Watson, played by Jude Law.

Filmed in December, the scene presented a sharp corrective to the popular cinematic view of Holmes, at least the one propagated by the old films featuring the wonderfully named British actor Basil Rathbone. That Holmes occasionally wielded guns, leapt out of carriages and rushed through the fog with Errol Flynnesque panache, but mostly he was a giant brain inside a tweed suit, sexlessly debonair in the way Hollywood liked its leading men in the 1930s and 1940s. His Watson, played by Nigel Bruce, was a lumpy, good-natured, birdbrained foil for Holmes’s brittle brilliance.

The Sherlock Holmes of “Sherlock Holmes,” which is scheduled for release on Nov. 13, will not be wearing a deerstalker hat. Nor will he be wearing an Inverness overcoat, the kind with the dashing cloak that hangs over the shoulders as extra protection against the English rain. Sometimes — as in one fight scene — he will not even be wearing a shirt. (This gives Mr. Downey a chance to show off his admirably chiseled abs.)

Sure, he will still be smarter than everyone within a three-planet radius, and he will retain his uncanny ability to intuit whole life stories from the tiniest speck of dust on a shoe. But he will do those things while being a man of action, a chaser, shooter and pummeler of criminals — “like James Bond in 1891,” Joel Silver, one of the film’s producers, said last fall.

This might me the Sherlock Holmes that the new generation like and love. Just the idea is exciting. A movie in which we can see incredibly amazing deductive abilities of Sherlock and a little bit of action too along the way. Die Hard Sherlock fans will most probably hate this, and those who are already familiar with him will find it difficult to adapt to this new Sherlock, but the new minds-those who are unfamiliar with the concept of Sherlock holmes will most probably love this one. Can't wait for this movie to release.

The Fountain - Movie Review- An intensely thought provoking movie about Death, Love and Spirituality.

Category: , By Manu
I saw "The Fountain" by Darren Aronofsky a couple of days ago and I am still trying to figure the whole movie out, but I know one thing- I Love this movie. From the director who gave us Pi and Requiem for a Dream comes another intelligent, thought provoking, visually stunning movie that will keep us awake at nights thinking about its profound meanings. I was more perplexed by the ending than I was after seeing "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind".

Plot: There is no sense in explaining the plot for this movie. You just have to see this story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world spanning thousands of years(or not) to see what I am saying. I don't think anyone can summarize the plot and still do justice to the movie.

Review: I began to see the movie without knowing this came from the same director that made Requiem for a Dream, or else I would have been prepared for the visually extravagant, thought provoking and intelligent movie "The Fountain" is. To be honest, I saw the trailer and expected some stupid sci-fi story with some mystic elements. But little did I know I was in for an intelligent film that forces us to put on our thinking caps.

(*Spoilers ahead. Spoiler-o-Phobics can skip the next paragraph and come back to read tit after seeing the movie*)
The meaning of the movie is a still debated topic, which is not surprising because the movie allows the audience to interpret the movie the way he/she wants. Some believe the bald Tommy and present day Tommy are the same and some believe that only the scientist Tommy is the real one and the rest are characters in Izzie's Book. I'm with the latter group and believe that scientist Tommy is the real one. A write up by Matt Withers, Brunswick, MD persuaded me to this conclusion and I think I agree with him on many points. I was totally bewildered towards the ending and was trying hard to connect all the plots together and eventually decided to Google for the explanation and this is the one I came to agree.

But apart from the intricacies of the plot, one thing you will undoubtedly realize is the different interpretations of Death. The movie tries to bring through the concept that Death is an Act of Creation, much like the Mayan legend about which the majority of the movie is . There are so many levels to this movie, but I can frankly admit that I miss out on many of them. I can feel the director trying to tell me many things through each shot, through symbols, but most of them escaped me. May be after I mature a little more I may be able to comprehend all those. But for an intelligent audience this is prime food for thought material.

Another thing that struck me was the visual appeal of the film. It was like the Director was creating art on cinema. Every scene was breathtakingly beautiful. The whole movie is shot is a soft gold light which gives it an unnatural atmosphere. Another thing I noticed was the use of light in the movie. The constellation we see at the beginning of the movie is repeated throughout the movie in forms of well placed light in the background. I found it particularly clever bit of Art Direction.

There was many scenes which was pure genius. One was a scene which a car travels through a road with street lights on both sides. The idea was so out of the box, I was like "whoa". I watched it a couple more times to revel in its grandeur. Another one that caught my attention is the one where a painting transitions between different tones. The first shot makes it seem like we are watching a door, and not a painting. As the camera slowly zooms out we hear a door opening, and the picture turns into a old painting with soft golden light. Soon we hear the door closing and the painting returns to its previous state and by this time the camera finishes zooming out and we realize its a painting. One cannot do justice explaining it in words.

Both Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are absolutely phenomenal in their roles, with Weisz particularly standing out, playing her character with what I can only describe as held-back intensity. It's a performance both of subtlety and of passion at the same time. Extra kudos must be given to Ellen Burstyn who delivers an extremely heartwarming and absolutely brilliant supporting performance.

The Musical score by Clint Mansel was absolutely breathtaking. It never comes to the front but yet it give us the feeling that it is there, always, lingering at the edge of your sense occasionally crossing the border to hit a note here and there. Music has always been an element that can affect me easily, and this one did so emphatically.

My Verdict-
This is a movie which requires a thinking brain to enjoy. Do not go in to watch the movie thinking its an easy ride. But for those who love to watch intelligent, thought provoking movie this is a treat. If you have enjoyed Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Dark City you will most certainly love this movie. Darren Aronofsky redefined sci-fi genre with this movie. Its a movie everyone should at least try to watch.

Oscar 2009 Nominees : The Kid from the slums and Benjamin Button sweeps up nominations

Category: , By Manu
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire sweeps the Oscar nominations with 13 and 10 nominations respectively. Although the announcements were made a little after daybreak in Los Angeles, the news broke here in India at a providential moment - when the film's Indian premiere in Mumbai was underway and several of the film's adult and child cast and crew assembled on stage, with television cameras ready to capture the whoops of joy.

A.R Rahman, with 3 nominations, sounded overwhelmed. "I was like a nervous schoolboy biting my nails," he told Times Of India. "I feel the whole world is watching me. I'm at the top of the world. Honestly, I am not even thinking about the Oscars now. Everything is a blur...It'll be a great energy booster for creative people in India." This is the first time an Indian has received three Oscar nominations. I just hope he wins all of them.

The Oscars pretty much turned in to a war with two players - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire. The thing that took me off guard was that Dark Knight failed to get nominations in almost every main category except for Heath Ledger's Joker for Best Supporting Actor. It did get eight nominations. But solely in the technical section-Achievement in Art Direction, Achievement in Cinematography, Achievement in Film Editing, Achievement in Makeup, Achievement in Sound Editing, Achievement in Sound Mixing, Achievement in Visual Effects.

Brad Pitt received his second Oscar nomination for Benjamin Button, and will go up in the Best Actor category opposite Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn(Milk) and Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke(The Wrestler). Winslet will compete opposite two actresses from independent films, Anne Hathaway(Rachel Getting Married) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River), and two previous winners, Angelina Jolie (Changeling) and Meryl Streep(Doubt), who received her 15th nomination.

In what's usually a rare feat, all five Best Picture nominees had corresponding director nods. And the Best Animated Feature nominees were Bolt, Kung Fu Panda and WALL-E (which received six nominations overall, including original screenplay).

The whole list of nominees are :

BEST PICTURE
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

BEST ACTOR
Richard Jenkins - The Visitor
Frank Langella - Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn - Milk
Brad Pitt - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler

BEST ACTRESS
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie - Changeling
Melissa Leo - Frozen River
Meryl Streep - Doubt
Kate Winslet - The Reader

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Josh Brolin - Milk
Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder

Bolt - Movie Review - Disney scores one without Pixar

Category: , , By Manu
When it comes to 3D nothing beats Pixar, or so I thought. When I saw the promo of Bolt I was not that impressed, and hence deferred watching the movie till now. But since it was Disney's first try at 3D animation without the help of Pixar I was interested to see what they come up with, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Bolt won me over right from the opening scene.

Plot: Bolt, an American White Shepherd, has lived his whole life on the set of his action TV show, where he believes he has superpowers and he has to protect his co-star Penny from the villains. When separated from the studio, thus Penny, by accident, he meets a female alley cat named Mittens and a hamster named Rhino. The threesome starts a cross-country journey to find Penny. Along the way, Bolt learns that he doesn't have superpowers but realises one doesn't need superpowers to be a hero.

Before we start a little history(I promise its not boring :D) (Courtesy:411mania)

Everyone knows that for the longest time, Disney “presented” such Pixar classics as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. That all changed at the onset of 2006 when Disney announced that it was buying the 3D animation powerhouse, doing so in May of the same year to the tune of 7.4 billion dollars. This entire hullabaloo was a result of behind-the-scenes disagreements between upper management at both companies over distribution plans, most famously for the film Toy Story 2 which was originally slated for direct-to-DVD release by Disney, which therefore according to the megalomaniacal mouse did not count towards a three-picture deal between themselves and Pixar even when the decision to go ahead with a full theatrical release was made. After further cat-fighting and bloody noses over issues like these and other creative control concerns, Mickey and company decided to throw a bunch of money at Pixar stockholders and go on with the newly-acquired studio under their umbrella, marching on in the hyphenated form of “Disney-Pixar.” Many Pixar purists probably still decry this merger and even casual fans may smell something a little stank in the air when considering the business venture but the new “Disney-Pixar” did manage to create one of the best 3D computer-animated films ever, which arrived last year with the introduction of a lonely little robot named Wall-E, so it can’t be all bad. Disney, however, does not seem to be content to simply sit back and let their 2006 acquisition pump out the hits for them.

Review: First of all, I saw this movie with mediocre expectations and ended up totally in love with it. We've seen attempts at a "dog movie" for a couple of years now(Air Buddies) and finally one got it absolutely right. Bolt is undoubtedly the Dog movie for this generation( ok .. ok .. This decade). Its been quite sometime since I have seen an absolute feel good animation movie since adorable Wall-E. I have to say Madagascar:Escape to Africa was kind of a letdown.

The movie starts out with the cutest animated puppies I've ever seen playing with a carrot puppet, chasing his tail and doing all kinds of normal doggie stuff. (Can it get any cuter than this?) A small girl, called Penny(Miley Cyrus) comes in and chooses him and says he is her good doggie and plays with him. Now we cut into an intense action scene, which lasted a bit too long in my opinion, but thoroughly enjoyable. It made me wonder about the possibility of such a film, which was instantly snubbed by my brain. But if a such a movie comes out I'll be sure to watch it.

The animation is really good and the level of realism just blew me away(I'm scared to use the word flawless lest some animation expert jump on me). The heartwarming story has a simple enough plot for the kids to understand, but doesn't seem too simple enough to insult the so-called developed adult brain. The movie taps into that part of our mind that wishes the dog sleeping at our foot were as loyal, brave, noble and unrelenting as we think him to be.

My Verdict: I'm not much of a dog person, but still I loved the film. The film got an engagingly dynamic cast and some incredible voice acting. The alley-cat Mittens and the hamster Rhino absolutely rocked the party. There were many points where I actually laughed out loud. I dare say the perfect family entertainment for the holiday season. The movie will be taken to heart by kids as well as adults and that is an achievement in itself. The wit of their lines was sharp and laugh inducing. Go see this movie. Even if you don’t have a kid to make it look like you have to.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa- Movie Review- A Definite Step Down

Category: , , By Manu
I saw this movie yesterday, and quite unlike Bolt, with high expectations. The latest installment of Madagascar didn't impress me at all. One could safely say Disney won this round by a huge margin. This movie has nothing new to offer and tries to pass off tried and tired jokes as enjoyable ones.

Plot: The sequel to 2005's "Madagascar", in which New York Zoo animals, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo, are still stranded on Madagascar. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane--sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just long enough to make it to the wildest place of all--the vast plains of Africa. They meet Alex's long lost family and the rest of the movie is about how they adjust to the new surrounding.

Review: The movie opens with a flashback of Alex in his toddler days being taken away from his parents.(Hmm wonder where I have heard that?). After the wacky scheme of flying to New York fails and they crash land in Africa, Alex is reunited with his family. His Dad is still the alpha male and the leader of the pack and Alex becomes the natural choice for succession. But before that he has to pass some kind of test top get accepted into the herd. Alex's Dad's long standing rival wants his throne and thus use Alex to get them both kicked out of the herd.(Now this definitely founds familiar). Soon a crisis strikes the herd and Alex, inevitably, rises to the occasion and save the day and thus made he and his father accepted into the herd reinstated as the leaders. If you haven't guessed it already, this all sounds strikingly similar to Disney's classic Lion King.

Marty finds himself multiplied by the hundreds and enjoys the running and tricks he shares with his fellow zebras. Melman becomes the witch doctor and begins to care for others, putting his own health worries to rest for the time being, as Gloria begins to search for a fellow hippo to become her mate. The group of zoo animals find themselves loving Africa, but each in their own way. They do find their friendships tested as time goes on.

My Verdict: The animation of the movie was a step up from the first movie, but a letdown in almost every other department. The trio isn't funny enough to make us adults laugh, the plot is "borrowed" and unoriginal and the dialogues and one liners are not hitting the mark. The only good parts come from the supporting characters like King Julien and the Penguins. Once again the Penguins steal the show with their quirky one-liners and Military manner. This is definitely one movie exclusively for the kids and rely solely on the success of the first installment of the movie to get a ground with adults. Take your kids to this movie. They might enjoy this, not you. Or even better take them to Bolt.

The two stars solely for the Penguins, The Chimps and King Julien.

Trailer Time: Fast & Furious, Franklyn, Next Day Air, The Last House on the Left, Fighting and Pink Panther

Category: , , By Manu
A little look at the new trailers which are out in YouTube.

Fast & Furious Trailer#2

A new trailer for Fast and the Furious hit the YouTube couple of days back. The background music could have done better than Soulja Boy, but still the trailer looks cool. Check it out. Hitting the theaters on 3rd April 2009

Franklyn
The film is a split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor. It's the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates. The plot and trailer looks awesomely interesting. The movie is gonna come out 20th February 2009 in UK and I'm sure to watch it.

Next Day Air
When a misguided UPS driver inadvertently delivers a package containing concealed bricks of cocaine to the wrong address, it sets in motion a desperate search and battle for the coke between the furious dealer that sent it, the fearful intended recipients that missed it, and the conniving accidental recipients that plan to flip it. Time is running out and everyone's trying to get their hands on the package that's been sent. Looks interestingly funny enough though reminds me a lot of Pineapple Express. Releasing 8th May 2009.

The Last House on the Left
Masters of horror Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham revisit their landmark film that launched Craven's directing career and influenced decades of horror films to follow: "The Last House on the Left." Bringing one of the most notorious thrillers of all time to a new generation, they produce the story that explores how far two ordinary people will go to exact revenge on the sociopaths who harmed their child.

Fighting
In New York City, a young counterfeiter (Tatum) is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist (Howard), who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit. Looks like another Never Back Down which I loved cause I love martial arts and fighting. So most probably I'll love this one too.

Pink Panther 2
Although the trailer has been long released I just thought I would mention it. The bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau returns in a brand new adventure and now teamed up with a squad of International detectives who are just as bumbling as he is. Their mission: Stop a globe-trotting thief who specializes in stealing historical artifacts. I loved the first Pink Panther and from the looks of the trailer will love this one too. The trailer is too funny.
"No, it only looks like a tape recorder. Its actually a pen". LOL .. Releasing on 6th February 2009.

Kite Runner- Movie Review - The Apple that Fell Far from the Tree

Category: , , By Manu
Khaled Hossieni's Kite Runner is a book I read recently and absolutely loved. I went to the library for months in search of this book which inevitably will always be out in circulation. Eventually I lend it from one of my friends and read it- and what an experience it was. The Kite Runner goes way up there with "To Kill a Mockingbird" for me (except on the intellectual part, I meant the emotional one). So you can guess my expectations when I decided to watch the movie based on the same book and also how my expectations were shattered even 30 minutes into the movie.

Plot: ‘The Kite Runner’ is the film of the international bestselling book which tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. It is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime.

Review: This movie just underlined my firm belief that some books are best left untouched by the movie world. Books which deal predominantly in monologues and thought are almost next to impossible to render into a great movie. I never saw "To Kill a Mockingbird" movie cause I had read the book before and I had no idea how a film true to the book can be made. I thought Kite Runner may be different especially in the very able hands of Marc Forster(Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace). But I was rudely shocked back to reality to find a film that lacks both the emotional turmoil of the protagonist and the skewed friendship between the two boys. Anyone who has read the book will almost definitely hate the movie for destroying a beautiful work of art.

The movie feels rushed, and forced in almost every frame. Every scene was delivered without conviction and I was almost irritated at many points to see beautiful moments(in the book) utterly destroyed, or omitted. Subtlety is not at all present in the movie. The screenplay made the characters say out loud many things that the audience should have made to realise themselves. Somethings loose their beauty when said out loud. The blatant expose of the characters thought irked me. A monologue or narration would have been immensely helpful in dealing with such a book, but somehow the director thought that he will be able to pull off a great movie just because the book was great.

The movie omits many many important and emotional moments all through out the movie but yet it never looses an opportunity to show "Big Bad Russia" in the most derogatory light possible within the framework of the movie. It always amazes me how Americans never looses a single opportunity to establish Russia is a bad guy. In a movie where no emphasis is given to develop the characters, the movie seems so interested in the particular political stance of the protagonists father - obviously Anti Russian, or/and Anti-Communist. Where the book handled the situation trithfully and didn't stress much on the political implications, the movie seems so interestd in showing its political stance at every possible situation.

One of the most touching and shocking scenes in the book, for me, was Hassan's Death. In the book it is written so beautifully that I could almost see the events unravelling. The director, which is so eager to finish the movie and go home I suppose, just mentions the event in passing. A guy says "Hassan is dead" and thats it. I was absolutly stunned at that point. Similarly the ending in the book was so beautifully meloncholic and yet hopeful, whereas the movie emphasizes the CGI Kite flying antics more than any human emotional changes. Even the parts where the Afghanistan of today is shown with its Taliban, the movie falters and falls on its face. The single scene which stood out was the one at the orphanage and the outburst or the Manager there. That single scene was better than the whole movie, and that actor's performance was better than anybody else's in the movie.

The movie is nothing like what I saw when I read the book. Every 10 minutes in the movie something would stand out as jarring or out of place. While the book was about the emotional journey and the unique friendship of the protagonist, the movie is very happy to show off CGI Kite flying techniques and somewhat beautiful landscape. Soraya, the protagonist's wife had an important role in the book, whereas in the movie it is reduced to just a sideshow. If I hadn't read the book I wouldn't have understood the emotional state of the characters at any point of the movie.

My Verdict-I can't seem to stop finding faults with this movie, but I think I'm gonna stop. I have no idea what was going through the director's mind when he made the movie. One may find the movie tolerable if they haven't read the book, but those who have read watch it to see how bad the movie rendition is and gloat over having read the book first. I didn't feel nothing all through the movie except irateness and boredom. The movie quotes lines from the book often, but that doesn't save the movie, not by a long shot. Kite Runner the movie is absolutely a movie that you can pass(I even encourage you to pass).

Golden Globe Awards 2009 - Slumdog Millionaire Sweeps up 4 Awards

Category: , By Manu
The Golden Globe awards were announced a few hours early and, not to my surprise, Slumdog Millionaire wins the awards in all the categories it was nominated to - "Best Motion Picture - Drama", "Best Director - Motion Picture", "Best Screenplay - Motion Picture" and last but not the least "Best Original Score - Motion Picture". Slumdog Millionaire faced tough competition from the biggies in the nomination list like, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon etc. But still the independently produced "Slumdog Millionaire seems to have swept the jury off their feet. The tally will be seen as a significant boost to the film's chances at next month's Oscars, for which it is already heavily favoured.

"Your mad, pulsating affection for our film is much appreciated," a glowing Boyle said as he accepted the award. He thanked his family before starting to break down.

"It's an absolute honour," said Beaufoy, accepting the award. "We really weren't expecting to be here in America at all at one time," he added. "So it's just amazing to be here."

For Boyle, 52, best known for his cult 1996 film Trainspotting as well as The Beach and 28 Days Later, the win marked his first Golden Globe.
Last week, Slumdog picked up five awards at the US Critics Choice Awards, including best picture and best director. The awards are seen as one of the most reliable predictors of success at next month's Academy Awards.

A short review of the important categories and winners:

1. Best Motion Picture - Drama
The nominees were The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire. Of these movies I've seen only Slumdog Millionaire and I needn't see the others to see that this award is well deserved. A rare blend of "feel good cinema" and "cinematic aesthetics". I have reviewed the movie earlier(Slumdog Millionaire Review) and I had a fleeting suspicion that that would end up winning the Golden Globes and even The Oscars. From what I hear The Curious Case of Benjamin Button may pose tough competition to Slumdog Millionaire. Lets wait and see.

2. Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
The nominees were Anne Hathaway(Rachel Getting Married), Angelina Jolie(Changeling), Meryl Streep(Doubt), Kristin Scott Thomas(I've Loved You So Long) and Kate Winslet(Revolutionary Road). The award went to Kate Winslet(her first) for her(I haven't seen the movie, just read a review) subtle and heart warming performance in Revolutionary Road.

3. Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
The comeback by the 80s bad boy Micky Rourke in the emotional drama "The Wrestler" got him the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama. I heard he really deserve that award as he pulled off an amazing performance in the movie. From what I saw from the trailers, that's absolutely true. The other nominees were Leonardo DiCaprio(Revolutionary Road), Sean Penn(Milk), Frank Langella(Frost/Nixon), and Brad Pitt(The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

4. Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy

I saw two out of the five nominations in this category and the award went to another movie. Beating the biggie "Burn After Reading" and immensely enjoyable "In Bruges" Woody Allen's Vicky Christina Barcelona bagged the award. The other two nominations were Happy-Go-Lucky and Mamma Mia!.

5. Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy
At last a category where I have seen the majority of movies. Colin Farrell's bumbling Scottish assassin in "In Bruges" bagged the award phasing out his strong competition in the likes of Dustin Hoffman(Last Chance Harvey), Brendan Gleeson(In Bruges) and James Franco(Pineapple Express). In Bruges is a great film that I saw completely unexpectedly and I loved every minute of it. I may well do a (late)review if I get the time.

6. Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Kate Winslet is on a roll. She bagged the "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama" and now this. The other nominees were Amy Adams(Doubt), Penélope Cruz(Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Viola Davis(Doubt), and Marisa Tomei(The Wrestler).

7. Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
No points for guessing this one. The result of this award was announced even before the nomination. Heath Ledger snatched a posthumous award for his memorable interpretation of The Joker in Dark Knight. I wasn't aware he had such potential until I saw the movie, and the movie world will sorely miss him(May he rest in peace). He will be remembered forever for his role in Dark Knight. I'm surprised why he didn't get nominated for the "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture" cause as far as I know Dark Knight was Heath Ledger's film way more than it was Christian Bale's. The other nominations were Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder(which was a pretty good performance), Tom Cruise for Tropic Thunder(wonder why he got a nomination for that), Ralph Fiennes(The Duchess) and Philip Seymour Hoffman(Doubt).

8. Best Director - Motion Picture
No surprise in this one either as the jury is clearly in love with Slumdog Millionaire. Danny Boyle bags this Golden Globe for his immensely enjoyable Slumdog Millionaire(Review) He won the award fair and square competing with David Fincher(The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Ron Howard(Frost/Nixon), Sam Mendes(Revolutionay Road) and Stephen Daldry(The Reader).

9. Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
Again Slumdog Millionaire performs its magic and bags the Best Screenplay award too and it goes to Simon Beaufoy. Excellently crafted screenplay is one of the many strengths of Slumdog Millionaire. The other nominations are the usual The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, and The Reader

10. Best Original Score - Motion Picture
A.R Rahman bags his first Golden Globe for the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire. This was not even a competition. The soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire is totally different, refreshing and addictive. I had reviewed the soundtrack long back and predicted many wins for the soundtrack(Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack Review). I hope its one of the many awards he is about to get. He won the award beating many big names like James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer. A nomination for Clint Eastwood for Original Soundtrack took me by surprise. How many skills does the man have?.

11. Best Animated Feature Film
Wall-E bagged this Golden Globe with his adorably cute robotic antics and great animation beating Kung Fu Panda and Bolt.

Trailer Time: Possible Bad Movies : Dance Flick, Dragonball Evolution, Fired Up

Category: , , , By Manu
Dance Flick - Releasing on 14 August 2009
The plot is simple- A satirical jab at musical/dance films focusing on a naive girl who uses dance to achieve her dreams, and the street smart guy who helps her along the way.

As if we don't have enough really bad spoofs already, Wayans Brothers are back with another spoof Dance Flick. And to think anyone will give money to the guys who brought us Little Man and White Chicks to make a movie in the spoof genre which is already cluttered with garbage. I just hope its not as bad as some of the spoof movies that has been releasing lately.

Dragonball Evolution- Releasing on 8 April 2009
Plot-"Dragonball Evolution" is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys

I don't expect anyone except the fans of the manga will look forward to watching this one, especially after seeing the trailers. The cgi effects looks pretty decent but thats not a movie is all about is it. Cheezy acting, horrible lines and even the martial arts doesn't look convincing in some of the scenes. Lets just hope the die hard fans won't be disappointed with the movie rendering of the manga.

Fired up - Releasing on 20 February 2009
Plot- Shawn Colfax (Nicholas D'Agosto) and Nick Brady (Eric Christian Olsen), the stars of the Gerald R. Ford High School football team, are dreading the prospect of another summer at football camp. After Nick hatches a scheme for the two to join their schools cheerleaders at cheer camp instead, they find themselves awash in a sea of gorgeous young women. It all goes great until Shawn falls for Carly (Sarah Roemer), the beautiful head cheerleader who sees right through them.

Of the three movies listed here, this one is by far the most decent looking and have a high probability of turning out to be a "one time throw away" type of enjoyment. The plot looks interesting, some of the jokes got me chuckling, and the acting doesn't seem to be so bad. But at the same time looking at the debut writer and director this premise, that is in no way original, can well be rendered into a mess that many like to call comedy these days. We'll have to wait and see.

The Fever - Movie Review - The Capitalist World Through the Socialist Eyes

Category: , , By Manu
Ever since I saw a part of this film on HBO I've been wanting to see it completely and yesterday finally that happened. This relatively unknown HBO original movie "The Fever", adapted from actor/writer Wallace Shawn's play of the same name, is a look into the poor of the world, Communism, Marxism, Revolution, Capitalism, Socialism, and many more things. This movie is not every one's cup of tea, but for those who can watch a serious movie, endure a one and a half hour monologue(not at all boring), are in for the treat of their life and may well see life in a totally different way after seeing this movie. You either hate this movie or love it.

Plot
Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave stars in this HBO Films adaptation of writer/actor Wallace Shawn's deeply personal stage play about the high cost of enlightenment, and the ever-widening gap between those who have and those who have not. Redgrave plays a nameless woman from a privileged world, suffering from a sense of disconnection from her comfortable life, who travels to a country (also nameless) in the throes of civil war. Suddenly deliriously ill, she collapses in a hotel bathroom, and, confronts an internal chorus of conflicting voices: dreams of comfort from her past, images of physical and economic violence, accusations of indifference, and cold-blooded arguments in favor of oppression. The central question: what, if anything, is a morally consistent way to live in the world as it is? Directed by Carlo Nero and featuring Angelina Jolie, Michael Moore, and Rade Serbedzija.

Review
Some say the global population is divided into the haves and the have-nots. Wallace Shawn seems to think so, since one of his recurring themes -- possibly his most insistent -- is the guilt of the haves. In the movie Vanessa Redgraves plays a character who becomes aware that there are people in the world that work just as hard as she had in her lifetime who have less. Far less. The movie is predominantly her monologue and her inner ramblings which provide food for thought. In a foreign country and in the midst of a fever, she examines her upbringing, her circumstances, and her shock that not everyone who works hard attains prosperity.

Capitalism preaches happiness through material purchases. Commodities such as fancy clothes that accentuate one's shallow character, edible underwear, ballet performances, superficial theater performances that exaggerate the life styles of the rich and the wannabe rich flock the markets for those who are made to think their salvation lies in buying more and more. But how many stop to think the background of the "Goods", the commodities? A simple inquiry into what materials mean to us, what ties us to the rest of humanity, the relationships created by the market system will also reveal what kind of people we are made to be.

In the movie Redgraves gets a copy of "Das Capital" by Karl Marx and she admits that most of it goes right past her head but the part about the workers affected her deeply. The capital doesn't care about the workers. It just want to extract the maximum from all the workers not caring about how the workers live or how they survive. We never pause to think of the workers behind all those "Goods" we consume, how they live, how they are exploited. By doing so we are also part of the vastly unjust system of the world in which we thrive on the poor. We are enjoying advantages at the expense of the poor. The movie asks what right does we have to enjoy such privileges. The first answer that comes to many may be cause they work hard. The movie also opens our eyes to the naked truth that the poor people work as hard as or even harder than us but still receive much less than we do. Why is our work more valuable than their work? Why does we get paid enough to spend on unwanted luxuries doing less work when the poor work harder than us and still get not enough to survive every day.

The movie has a piece of animated sequence that shows us how our ancestors oppressed the poor, deprived them of their opportunity to prosper by violent methods and presented those to us right from the moment we were born. This is true in so many levels. The rich has always been oppressing the poor, though its is much less apparent nowadays. The Capitalist has taken over the world and is wrecking havoc among all the nations that it has a hold on by making the rich-poor divide even larger. The money is getting concentrated on a few rich rendering the poor more poor. In any country there may be a few people who earn a thousand times more than hardworking poor people, doing nothing. This is fundamentally unjust and it pains to acknowledge that every one of us is part of that oppression knowingly or unknowingly.

There is a scene with Micheal Moore and the conversation about the delicious ice cream. It is such a powerful scene. After starting to see the Capitalist world from a newly found Socialist eye, Redgraves goes to a country a friend of hers describes as a beautiful country with lovable people. That unnamed country has undergone a recent revolution and the capitalist oppressors were thrown out of power. The people there are happy, if not rich. The particular conversation I'm talking about is one that deals with the dilemma faced by the government over the distribution of milk. On one hand they can give the milk to the children who needs it, and on the other hand it can be given to the tourists and thus make a better impression about the country and thereby better world relations. How will a government decide a trade off between these two?

Redgraves then travels to the neighboring country where revolution is still in its rudimentary stages on the suggestion from Micheal Moore. The stark contrast between the two countries are shown clearly. In the first country Redgraves was greeted with garlands while in the second country she is greeted with Kalashnikovs and beggars. While the people in the first country were happy, in the second country the people were bitter, oppressed and on the verge on armed revolution. There she meets Angelina Jolie a young revolutionary whose sister was raped and killed by the soldiers. Redgraves learns of the oppression the people are facing from the military government from Angelina Jolie.

She tries to return of her old life and forget about all these things but she is unable to do so and eventually she returns to that poor oppressed country once more and that is where in the midst of a fever she has the revelation and decides to dissect her personality. Redgraves is torn between becoming a true honest, respectable human being or accepting the capitalist animal side that will benefit from the grand theft rampant in a market system. All she has to do is either submit to her system created personality, close her eyes to the truth and eat, drink be happy in the face of global looting and rape – the easy choice-, or face torture, misery and even death, just like millions of others are going through every day who have the courage to stand up and resist to the unjust, criminal and illegitimate capitalist system. This dilemma of relationships between two sides of her personality, the truth and the lies of our market driven system is portrayed perfectly in this film.

My Verdict- This is a purely intellectual movie, and can be enjoyed only if you believe in some ideals, or are willing to be introduced to them. May it be Capitalism, or Socialism, both can enjoy the movie from opposite ends of the spectrum- Socialists being on the favorable side. Watch the movie only if you are prepared to question the way of life you have been so accustomed to. Watch the movie is you have something more than sympathy towards the poor. This is not a movie for an average movie goer expecting entertainment, instead watch it as food for thought-cause I promise you, once you watch the movie you will definitely think about it for quite sometime(be it favoring the views expressed or rebuking it). This is a must watch movie for anyone who is concerned with anything other than his/her own little life. An eye opener to a whole new spectrum of thoughts.
